How to Setup Google AMP in WordPress
Below are the steps to install and setup Google AMP in your WordPress Site.
- First, install and activate the AMP plugin. Once you install and activate the plugin, you can view the mobile AMP version from Appearance » AMP
You may wish to change the header background and text color on this page. The header background color you choose will also be used for links.
You should be aware that the plugin will automatically add AMP for WordPress pages of all your posts. To verify the AMP plugin works, you can add
/amp/ at the end of the URL. Like this:
Don’t worry about any duplicate content issues on Google, the plugin automatically adds a rel=”canonical” tag so that Google knows the content isn’t duplicated.
If you are having 404 errors when viewing the amp version, then visit Settings » Permalinks page in your WordPress admin and click ‘Save Changes’ button. Don’t change anything there, just press the save button. This will refresh your website’s permalink structure.
Index Google AMP pages on Search Engine
The AMP plugin for WordPress comes with limited customization and settings. There is need to index the AMP pages on Google. This can be done easily with Yoast SEO. You need to install and activate the Glue for Yoast SEO & AMP.
Once you have activated the Glue for Yoast SEO & AMP plugin, visit SEO » AMP page to configure plugin settings.
The plugin allows you to enable AMP support for Posts, pages and medias.
I prefer Posts Enable and Page and Media Disabled, then Click “Save Changes”
On the design tab, you upload a amp icon (header image) and a default image which will be used when a post does not have its own featured image. You can also choose colors and design options.
In the Analytics tab, you add your Google Analytics ID to track your Amp web visitors.
Don’t forget to click on the save settings button to save your changes.
Accelerated Mobile Pages in Google Search Console
You can know what keywords users search on Google when they view your WordPress version
Log in to your Google Search Console dashboard and then click on Search Appearance » Accelerated Mobile Pages.
If you don’t see your AMP results when you recently installed Google AMP, don’t worry it may take a while for Google to index your Accelerated Mobile Pages and then show data in Search Console.
